SHAH ALAM: Government pathologist Dr Shahidan Md Noor has disputed the opinion of Thai forensic pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand in the Teoh Beng Hock inquest.

While Dr Pornthip had told the inquest last year that Teoh’s death was very likely a homicide, Dr Shahidan who conducted the second post-mortem on Teoh’s remains said the injuries found on Teoh’s remains were consistent with the fall from a high place.

Dr Shahidan, who is the Sungai Buloh Hospital Pathology Unit head, said Teoh’s death was due to multiple injuries suffered as a result of falling from a high place.

Dr Pornthip had on Oct 21 last year told the inquest that Teoh’s death was 80% homicide and several injuries found on him appeared to be pre-fall injuries.

Dr Pornthip had said the marks on Teoh’s neck looked like he had been manually strangled and the injury to his anal region was a penetrative injury.

She also said abrasions on Teoh’s right upper thigh looked like he had been beaten with a piece of wood.

However, Dr Shahidan dismissed these yesterday. He explained there were clear signs indicating that Teoh had not been manually strangled.

“If there was strangulation, the pressure (intensity) from the hands would be different. The part (of the neck) where the hands had gripped would be more marked,” said Dr Shahidan when questioned about the second post-mortem report by government appointed counsel Tan Hock Chuan.

He added that Teoh’s thyroid cartilage was also not fractured and there were no signs of asphyxia to suggest that he had been strangled.

On the abrasions on Teoh’s right upper thigh, Dr Shahidan said the bruise had reached the deep muscle, indicating that it was sustained due to the fall.

According to Dr Shahidan, given that Teoh had landed on his feet, many of his bones had been severely broken.

In his report, Dr Shahidan stated that when Teoh landed on his feet, his buttocks struck the blunt surface, which resulted in lower limb bone fractures.

The force of the fall was also transmitted to the pelvic bones and the spine, leading to fractures and displacement with surrounding muscle contusions.

Dr Shahidan also said the initial post-mortem report by pathologists Dr Khairul Azman Ibrahim and Dr Prashant Samberkar was accurate.

“In my opinion both Dr Khairul Azman and Dr Prashant had done well and the post-mortem report was good. It is not easy to come up with a report like that,” said Dr Shahidan, adding that he agreed with the findings in the first post-mortem report.

Earlier in the day, Dr Shahidan told the inquest that he had been reluctant to conduct the post-mortem on Teoh’s remains.

He added that one Tricia Yeoh from Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim’s office had called and requested him to conduct the second post-mortem followed by a similar request from Teoh’s family lawyer Gobind Singh Deo the following day.

Dr Shahidan said he carried out the post-mortem after DPP Mohd Abazafree Mohd Abbas informed him that the court had ordered him to carry out the task.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)-appointed forensic pathologist Prof Dr Peter Vanezis, Dr Pornthip, Dr Khairul Azman, Dr Prashant and several others were present when the two-hour long second post-mortem was conducted on Nov 22, last year.

Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abbas fixed March 1 for Gobind to cross-examine Dr Shahidan.

Teoh, 30, the political secretary to Selangor executive council member Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead the morning after he was taken to the state MACC office in Plaza Masalam here for questioning on July 15 last year over alleged irregularity in disbursement of funds.
